Alabama SHRM State Conference 2014

We decided to get the scoop for you guys on this years state conference directly from the source. We asked Mike and Melissa to share some of the info with us about what to expect this year. Mike Bean is NASHRMs past president and Melissa DeVore is NASHRMs VP of Programs. Both Mike and Melissa serve on the Alabama State Council this year as conference co-chairs so we thought no one would know the conference like they do! Here is what we found out:

As conference co-chairs I thought you two would be an excellent source for us HR pros to get the scoop on the upcoming conference. Let’s kick it off with a simple question- tell us a little about yourself and how you ended up in your current role for state council?

For Melissa, moving from New Mexico and serving on the New Mexico state council as conference chairwomen for their conference, it was an opportunity to provide her experience and vision to make the Al State SHRM Conference the best HR conference around.

For Mike, as the past president of NASHRM and serving on the state council for the last 10 years the timing was right to take on a new challenge that benefits and supports all HR professionals within the state of Alabama.

I’ve been hearing some buzz that this year’s conference is going to be different than previous years conference, how so?

Yes!  We are excited to announce a change in venue for 2014.  The BJCC-Sheraton provides a true conference destination hotel feel.   It is our hope that attendees will take advantage of the local attractions and nightlife that is offered in downtown Birmingham.  We are also announcing our new vendor “Market Place” on Tuesday night from 4:45 – 7:45pm.  Attendees will have to opportunity to network and visit with conference attendees and sponsors. Hor d’oeuvres and drinks will be served.  This year there will be over 60 vendor sponsors on hand!

What made y’all want to do things differently this year?

We had outgrown our previous conference location (a good situation to be in) so we decided to focus more on meeting the needs of our attendees and sponsors.  We hope everyone likes the results!

How can I prepare for the conference? Any tips on some dinners, parties, what I should pack, what I should leave behind, parking and anything else you can think of?

First of all there is a lot to do in the local downtown area.  Check out for more up to date information on the events and the Birmingham city scene.  Parking for the conference will be $8 per day in the parking deck next to the hotel and street parking is available in a first-come-first –serve basis.  Business casual is the expected attire or the conference.  Also be prepared to do a lot of walking.

How can I connect online with people attending the conference? I heard NASHRM is sponsoring the tweet screens for the event so that leads me to believe there is a hashtag for the conference… are you all ready to share what it is?

This year you can keep up with what is happening at the conference by using #alshrm14 and follow us on twitter @ALSHRM

If I were an SPHR I would be particularly interested in any sessions that qualify for Strategic credit-any on the list so far?

Total Credits submitted for HRCI approval at 11 (7 general and 4 strategic).   We are still awaiting approval from HRCI, so keep your fingers crossed.

What kind of goodies can I pick up at the conference? I know we usually have books for sale by speakers at the conference, what else will be out there as a resource that we attendees can pick up?

Plenty will be on hand.   Most vendor sponsors will provide mementos to remember them by as you go by their booths.  Most vendor sponsors also have a door prize to be drawn at the end of the day along with 3 cash drawings of $500, $250 and $250 at the end of the conference. Some of our speakers will have books to sell and sign as well as there will be a location for the SHRM bookstore also!

Anything else you want to leave our audience with?

Make plans to attend; you will not want to miss a minute of this exciting 2-day conference.  It is value price at $299.

You can register for the event at! Do you have any questions they didn't cover? Leave them in the comments below and we will get an answer for you! See you in May!
